What is permanent makeup?

Permanent Makeup (PMU) is a semi-permanent tattoo. For the eyebrow area it is known as Microblading, Micropigmentation, Brow Embroidery, 3-D or 6-D Brows, and Brow-Feathering. Microblading is the process in which disposable sterile needles implant hypoallergenic pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. Permanent makeup procedures are very different from conventional tattoos and will fade over time. Cosmetic tattoo is defined as "permanent" simply because particles remain in the skin despite the fading color.

Before beginning the procedure, the treatment area is prepped with numbing agents to make the client experience as comfortable as possible. PMU eyebrows offers convenience and confidence to those that struggle with their brows, from patchy and sparse brows all the way to nonexistent brows. Some clients choose Microblading to fill in certain areas otherwise covered with eyebrow makeup, while others want to create an entire new eyebrow. The possibilities are endless!

Am i A good candidate for Microblading?

Almost anyone is a candidate for semi-permanent brows as long as the client is relatively healthy and meets the minimum age requirement. Please read the list of contraindications and click the link below to cosmetictattoo.org to determine your eligibility.

Those who are NOT ideal candidates for semi-permanent Makeup:

  • You are under 18

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • You have been on Accutane within 1 year

  • You have irritation of the skin in or around the area of the procedure. Skin irritations include blemishes, rashes, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, and sunburn. The procedure cannot be performed until the area is free of irritation and completely healed.

  • You are on Retin-A or Retinols. The client must be off medications 30 days before appointment and avoid 30 days after procedure.

  • Diabetic

  • Have HIV or Hepatitis or any other viral infections and/or diseases

  • Undergoing Chemotherapy

  • Epilepsy

  • A Pacemaker or major heart problems

  • Had an Organ transplant

  • Weepy eyes, eye infection, severe allergies

  • Sick

  • You generally don’t heal well and develop infections easily

  • If you have LARGE pores or Oily/Severely Oily Skin, your results WILL appear softer/solid or powdered looking.

  • If you have thin, sensitive skin AND Rosacea. This will cause bleeding and poor pigment retention.

Is Microblading safe?

Safety and sanitation are the most important pieces of any PMU procedure. All tools used on the client are sterile and one-time use instruments. All the items in the procedure area are cleaned with high level disinfectants.

is the procedure painful?

All of my client's Microblading experiences range from slight discomfort to completely pain free. I use a topical cream to begin the procedure and I continually numb the area with a gel anesthetic throughout the procedure once the skin is broken open. For sensitive clients, they may require longer time to fully numb, but the sensation is tolerable.

Do I need a consultation prior
to my appointment?

Consultation is not necessary. When you meet with me we will discuss in depth what you are hoping to achieve from your Microblading procedure. Based off of my assessment of your skin type, skin tone, undertones, and existing eyebrows, I will recommend shapes and colors to deliver the ideal result. It is my priority to offer a detailed explanation to ensure that we are on the same page throughout the entire process. Also, we are able to make design adjustments at the touch-up appointment which is scheduled 4 weeks after the initial appointment. Because of this, in our first procedure we will go lighter than darker and thinner rather than thicker as we can always add more, but subtracting is a lot more difficult.

What can I expect at the procedure?

Please allocate 3 hours for your appointment. First I will apply the topical anesthetic to the area as you fill out the necessary paperwork. During this time we will discuss your eyebrow goals, choose ink color and answer any questions you may have. Following this I will wipe off the numbing cream and "exfoliate"the area with a mascara wand to remove dead skin cells. I then cover the area with the numbing gel and we let it sit for about 5 minutes. Afterwards I proceed to measure and map out the brows until the we agree with the shape. I follow this with a facial razor and baby scissors and I clean the area around the brow outline to ensure the brows are groomed. Then we begin!

The actual procedure can range anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on things like the eyebrow design, client skin type, and client comfort. Lastly, I review aftercare instructions and we schedule your follow up appointment.

What will I look like after
the procedure?

Your eyebrows will intensify in color and appear more defined for the first 4-6 days. The eyebrows will look the darkest the day following the procedure due to the ink oxidizing in the skin. The ink may look "warmer" if you tend to have sensitive skin. Also, there may be temporary redness for an hour and a half following the procedure. If your concerned about the healing process of your brows, you may want to resume your regular schedule after one week.

When can I return to work?

Most clients return to work immediately or return the next day. This is all dependent on you and your comfort level. The most noticeable is the first day after the procedure.

what activities do I need to avoid?

DO NOT TOUCH YOUR BROWS.

Seriously.

Don't do it.

If you must, make sure your hands are completely clean and free of bacteria. For at least the first 10 days you need to avoid sweating, water, and sun exposure on your brows as much as possible! There is no swimming or suntanning for 2 weeks following the Microblading procedure. I always tell clients if they have a bathtub, USE IT! This is much easier for bathing and the steam of hot showers can affect the healing process. Only the 3 following products are allowed on the brow area during healing: sterile water, coconut oil, and A+D Ointment, and the use of these products will be explained in the aftercare instructions.

how do I prep for my appointment?

Please ensure that the area is healthy, moisturized, and free from any skin irritations prior to the procedure. Please discontinue use of any retinols, chemical exfoliants, or drying agents at least 30 days prior to your appointment. Please do not drink alcohol or caffeine 24 hours prior to your appointment.

Should I wear makeup to the procedure?

If you are an every day makeup wearer, please do! This will give me a good visual of your personal makeup style. If you don't usually wear makeup, don't worry about it. You and I will create a look that you are excited about.

how long will my brows last?

The lifespan of semi-permanent brows depends from person to person as there are many variables that affect the longevity. Factors like skin type, age, skincare, skin treatments (peels, facials), sun exposure, and sweating are a few examples of things that could affect how long a clients eyebrows last. On average, brows last anywhere from 1-3 years, but the fading process begins right after the procedure as the skin cells shed and regenerate. It is recommended to freshen up brows (brighten color, crisp up hair strokes) every 8-14 months.

clients can usually "tell" when they are touch-up "ready" when they are having to fill in more and more areas with eyebrow makeup as the ink is slowly fading. Usually after the first round of Microblading procedure and touch up, the client will get an idea of their body's healing cycle and how often they need to come in for brow maintenance.

Will getting my eyebrows done
save me money?

More than likely, yes! According to an article by InStyle, over the span of a lifetime the average woman spends over $15,000 on makeup. Having a PMU procedure takes away the regular costs of makeup products and tools that achieve the same effect. Best of all, you wake up ready to go!

When can I wear brow makeup again?

Because Microblading provides the look of naturally full brows via hair strokes, some clients desire to continue filling in their eyebrows for different effects or makeup looks. You are able to apply brow makeup 2 weeks after your procedure.

Should I shape my existing brows before the appointment?

It isn't necessary. After we have mapped and drawn on your eyebrow shape, I will use a facial razor and baby scissors to groom the area. After the procedure and touch up, you are encouraged to maintain the shape via whichever hair removal method you prefer.

Are there cheaper prices for PMU?

By all means, shop around and do your research! My pricing is a reflection of my commitments to safety, quality, service, and my expertise from my years of experience in the beauty industry. When you choose a technician, you are choosing someone that will be your brow artist for years to come as you maintain your brows, as you age, or change your look! I always recommend to go with someone who makes you feel comfortable and you feel safe in their workspace. It should feel clean and professional!

Disclaimer

PMU is an art, and there is only so much I can control for the outcome of each procedure. Each client is different and will create results that are unique to that individual. Also, each procedure may produce a different outcome, even on a returning client. The same person may experience changes to the skin and this could produce a different result. This is something I cannot predict or control. Participating in a PMU procedure means that the client understands the inherent risks involved. Going to another artist after having your brows done by Emily Mercer Beauty immediately releases you as a client.
